Last year, we completed a major overhaul of our community garden, adding new planter boxes, replacing the substandard soil, and improving access for us old folks who can't bend over.

The garden was a huge hit with our members and they went to town putting in tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, spinach, carrots, basil and a bunch of other herbs, and even some potatoes. 

Our harvest was wonderful, and the quality of the produce was outstanding. The veterans claim it was because they composted their vegetable scraps at dinner and were able to avoid using manure for fertilizer.

However.

With the hot, dry summer we experienced and that AWFUL week with the heat dome, many of the plants dried out or died out. We simply couldn't keep them moist enough.

So, our project for this year is to improve the drainage around the beds and add a trickle-feed irrigation system. This system will be fed from our rain barrels and then from the hose if the barrels run dry.
